Explore the ins and outs of SMP as we address concerns, share insights, and guide you through the journey of achieving a natural and confident look.
Scalp Micropigmentation, or SMP, is a cutting edge procedure that aims to restore the appearance of a full head of hair for individuals experiencing hair loss. The concept behind Scalp Micropigmentation revolves around the careful placement of pigments into the upper layers of the skin to mimic the look of natural hair follicles. By carefully replicating the colour, density and distribution of hair follicles, SMP creates the illusion of a closely shaved or buzzcut hairstyle, effectively camouflaging areas of baldness or thinning hair. SMP can give confidence back to both men and women who have experienced all types of hair loss. It’s a cosmetic, non-surgical, non invasive hair loss treatment. It’s suitable for all stages of hair loss as well as all genders, age and ethnicities.
While Scalp Micropigmentation should last for several years, it’s likely that it will begin fading, to a degree, at some point. However, the degree of fading depends on several factors such as how your body responds to treatment. This means that Scalp Pigmentation fading is highly individualised to your body, skin and lifestyle.
The first session allows your practitioner to mark out areas where we need to avoid or blend into then lay down a foundation, which is usually quite sparse as this allows us to go between the gaps and increase density on each follow up session. Sometimes clients can be a little disappointed after the first session, as there isn’t a significant amount to see just yet. Patience must be applied, as the best results come to those who allow the process to unfold gradually. There may be some redness of the scalp and this will subside within a few hours or longer, depending on the individual and skin type.
Most treatments will be complete after three sessions but each person and treatment is different. Density Fills and Alopecia usually require a fourth session. Occasionally, other treatments may require a fourth session.
In many instances, people will notice there is something different about you but they’ll be unsure what ( ie you look different, you look well, you look younger. ) All very positive comments, giving confidence back to clients who have suffered with hair loss for many years.
The beauty of SMP is that no matter your hair colour, you can always achieve a seamless and natural looking result. Pigment can be and is diluted to make various shades of grey and black. We start by diluting a special carbon based pigment that is mixed with dilute to achieve the desired shade. Depending on how grey the client’s hair is, the practitioner will add more or less dilute to perfectly match the clients skin tone and follicles. This is done with exact precision by using a syringe to measure distilled water when adding it to the pigment. Whenever hair is cut short, it appears in a tone and shade of grey — it just depends on how strong or soft that tone is. It’s the practitioner’s job to get the appropriate tone and shade for their client.
Usually, our clients are able to go back to work on the same day or the very next day. The scalp may be slightly red after treatment but this will subside within a few hours to a day, depending on the client.
It depends on which procedure you require. The times can vary but each treatment will take between 2 to 4 hours each. Alopecia sessions can take up to 6 hours. This will be discussed with you prior to your first treatment. The first to second treatment, there is a seven day gap. There is a four week gap between the second and third treatment session.
Hairline selection is crucial to ensure success with your SMP. There are factors that determine what hairline is most suitable for you. We tailor the hairline to your individual features and facial symmetry. The hairline should complement your facial structure and enhance your natural features. The hairline should be age appropriate and consider any potential future hair loss. We also account for your personal preferences, as there is a range of styles for what can look natural on any given person. The client and technician must agree with which type hairline best suits prior to the first treatment.
The results look extremely realistic since the pigment is matched precisely to your natural hair colour and the dots are placed to mimic real hair follicles. No one will be able to tell that it’s not your own, natural hair growth.
Yes, it is totally safe and non-invasive. The treatment only goes into the dermis, the second layer of the skin. We have never seen any adverse affects due to Scalp Micropigmentation although, you can never rule out an allergic reaction, which is why a medical history form will be filled out prior to your treatment. If you have previously had a reaction to any tattoo ink or pigment, we will perform a patch test.
Remember, each persons body reacts differently. There may be redness during and after the procedure. This will calm down after the treatment. The redness may last for a few hours up to 24.
If your head becomes dry and flaky in the days following your treatment, you will need to lightly apply a water based moisturiser (moisturiser must not include alcohol) to the dry areas on the scalp. Avoid scratching your head (give it light tapping). Dry scalp and skin conditions such as dandruff, eczema or psoriasis MUST BE cleared up before treatment commences. Skin that is sunburned, dry or flaking may not heal or accept pigment properly. If you arrive to your next session with a dry scalp, we may have to reschedule your appointment so it is vital that you contact us immediately to rebook.
After each SMP treatment, you must wait until 4 days after to cleanse your head using a damp cloth ( not wet ). You must also wait 5 days after each treatment to shave your head. When shaving, gently go over the treated area but not too close, as to not affect the tattooed area. This may remove some healing scabs.
We strongly advise against wearing any hats after each treatment during all your procedures as this could cause the head to sweat which will affect the results. You need to avoid rain and sun, if possible. Cover your head with an umbrella or loose hoodie. If your job requires you to wear a hat / hard hat, we highly recommend taking time off work after each session, if possible, as this will cause you to sweat excessively. We strongly recommend not wearing a hat until 14 days after your final session. Preferred headwear would be cotton, breathable hats.
After your final treatment session, you may resume life as normal but still take adequate precautions ie direct sunlight, use a high factor sunscreen. Moisturise daily with a light moisturising water based lotion. Avoid putting any products on your head that contains alcohol.
Cost of the treatment depends on the area requiring SMP and the amount of pigmentation required. We will provide a bespoke quote at your FREE consultation or, alternatively, you can submit photos to us via email or Whatsapp for a free quotation.
