When you first notice hair loss, this can hit you like a ton of bricks! It can certainly effect one’s mental health as it could lead to stress, anxiety and depression. On many occasions, if you experience hair loss at a young age, it affects people more. We often hear “I’m still really young…can I really be losing my hair already? “What Signs Should I Look For That Show I’m Losing My Hair?”
Unfortunately with hair loss, age really does not matter. I personally started losing your hair in my early – mid twenties. This was a definite blow to the ego and I started feeling older than I actually was.
Signs of balding in men
Balding is assessed using the Hamilton-Norwood classification system. This system focuses on recognising major patterns of hair loss that can be seen:
Temples – Hair starts thinning around the temples and at the top of the back of your head, which is called the crown.
Receding hairline – Hair starts thinning and moving back around the front of the head on the sides, often called a receding hairline. One of the most common types of thinning in men is the receding hairline, which makes an M shape as the two sides recede at a faster rate than the middle of the scalp.
Top of the head – Thinning hair on the top of your head can happen over time. You will not go bald overnight – you will probably start to notice thinning especially at the top of your head for many years before baldness becomes fully visible.
Circular or patchy bald spots. Some people lose hair in circular or patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. Your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out.
Full-body hair loss. Some conditions and medical treatments, such as alopecia Areata and chemotherapy for cancer, can result in the loss of hair all over your body. The hair normally grows back after cancer treatments but sometimes, it does not grow back, as with Alopecia Areata.
Sudden loosening of hair. A physical or emotional shock, such as a death in the family, can cause hair to loosen. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing, washing your hair in the bath /shower or even after light tugging. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning but is temporary.
Signs of balding in women
Balding in women can begin anywhere between the ages of 12 and 40, or even later. Signs of baldness in women are classified using the Ludwig system. This system has identified two major types of balding:
Thinning on top – You might notice thinning across the entire top of the head and not on the sides.
Widening part – Widening of the part on the top of the head is also a common sign of balding in women.
Here are some other signs of balding in women to look out for:
Thinning across the whole head
This is the most common type of balding pattern in women, as opposed to the receding M-shaped hairline in men.
