Recently, we had a customer come in for a consultation who asked the following question – “I see loads of grey hairs on my scalp. Will Scalp Micropigmentation work with grey hair?”
Having grey hair can become demoralising and a real concern for both men and women who have thinning hair or severe hair loss. This can affect self esteem and self confidence. The vast majority of men and women have grey hair by the time they turn 50. Scalp Micropigmentation is often hailed as one of the more effective hair loss solutions offered. It delivers very realistic results and is compatible for both men and women. It can work with a variety of hair types and colours. One of the main concerns with SMP is its compatibility with grey hair. As we age, we lose the pigments in our hair follicles that give it its natural colour. Eventually, our hair will look completely grey once all the pigment dies out.
For some, like myself, grey hair can start in the late teens and early 20’s.When I was doing research on SMP before I had my procedure, this was one of my concerns as I’ve had loads of grey hair for years! In reality, going grey isn’t something you should be worried about when you undergo scalp micropigmentation. The treatment is designed to work with all types of hair colours, even with grey hair! You’ll need to remember that even if your hair is greying, the roots are black.
The great part of Scalp Micropigmentation is that no matter your hair colour, you can always achieve a natural looking result. A professional Scalp Micropigmentation practitioner starts by diluting a special carbon based pigment that is mixed with distilled water to achieve the desired colour. Depending on how grey the client’s hair is, the practitioner will add more or less water to perfectly match the pigment’s tone and shade. This is done with exact precision by using a syringe to measure distilled water when adding it to the pigment.
Many patients who have had the scalp micropigmentation performed are anxious to see their treatment once their hair turns grey. Believe it or not, your SMP treatment will not look out of place. This is because the required hair length that you need to maintain after undergoing the procedure. Most practitioners recommend their clients shaving their head once or twice a week to maintain that clean- cut look. Whether your hair colour is blonde, black, brown, or grey, it will appear grey when you keep it closely shaved.
It also will depend on how your pigment will age. As is with traditional tattoo ink, the pigments used in SMP will fade over time but at a much slower rate. The pigment will appear lighter compared to when you first had the treatments. It will blend in more accurately with grey hair. Scalp Micropigmentation practitioners hardly ever encounter any issues with the treatments looking unnatural when their client’s hair turns grey. We recommend our clients have a touch up, approximately every four to six years, to keep the appearance of real hair.
Don’t forget – When having Scalp Micropigmentation with grey hair ideally means keeping your hair shorter but each treatment is different. Each solution is unique to every client.
