Scalp micropigmentation has one of the fastest healing times compared to other hair loss solutions. Whereas a hair transplant can take an incredibly long six to twelve months to heal, You will be fully healed after an SMP treatment in only four to seven days! The recovery time varies from patient to patient but the following would be the approximate duration of the process.
You may notice slight inflammation, which is natural. It is a natural response as the skin is a sensitive organ. This should be no cause for alarm, and it indicates the body is doing what it is supposed to be doing. Don’t forget – the micro-perforations, which are made during the treatment is the cause. You can use a soothing cream, which is suitable for the healing process.
It is also common to notice slight redness on the scalp for 2-3 days post session. The majority of our clients tell us their redness subsides within 24 hours. To help the healing subside a bit quicker, we use a red spray, which is supplied from Ink Cali. If we notice excess redness, we spray on the red, sensitive area.
So how does the scalp heal itself? When the redness subsides you may notice scab formation throughout the area. Whenever the skin is ruptured or perforated, the immune system comes into action to heal it quickly. During the SMP procedure, micro perforations are made into the skin, and the pigment is injected into that area. Scabs are protective layers. The healing process still continues under the scabs. As you near the end of the week, the scabs become dry and some start to fall off. As the scabs fall off, new skin is formed and the scalp fully heals itself. The outermost layer of our skin, the epidermis, is relatively thick and works as a protective barrier for underlying dermis, the second layer, and glands. When a perforation is made in the epidermis, our body deals with it by launching white blood cells to close off the wound and then generates a new tissue. When perforation or injury extends from the epidermis to the dermis, bleeding occurs and inflammatory response begins. A Clotting mechanism begins and the scab is formed within several hours. The scab covers the wound to prevent any microorganism from entering the skin. New cells are formed and after some days the wound is closed off by “contraction”.
Luckily, there is no downtime needed after a scalp micropigmentation session. Most people will be able to go to work the same day or within the next couple of days after a treatment. Clients are also allowed to wear breathable hats or headwear, should they feel the need. The entire healing process after scalp micropigmentation is similar to that of a sunburn or tattoo.
The most important thing to remember is each person heals differently. While some heal fairly quickly, others take a bit longer. You will most definitely be fully healed in time for your next treatment.
