How Often Do I Need To Shave?

At the beginning, we recommend shaving your head four days to a week after undergoing scalp micropigmentation treatment. Depending on how fast your hair grows, you may need to shave your hair almost every day. It also depends on what kind of look you are trying to achieve as most experts suggest to keep your hair as short as possible to achieve that clean, buzz cut look. For people with male pattern baldness or large expanses of bald areas, that schedule is usually fairly tight. If your natural hair gets too long, the look will begin to look fake. For many with patchy or small bald spots, they find that a little bit of growth can help to create an illusion of depth. If you are comfortable with growing your hair by at least a centimetre, then you can get away with shaving your hair at least three times a week.

As I’ve discussed in previous blogs, the way you shave and maintain your scalp will need to change after you have the SMP procedure performed. There are several different methods you could employ for maintaining that shaved look:

Clippers (with no guard)
Electric Razors (meant for the face)
Foil Shaver
Wet Shaving

Wet Shaving means shaving with water and not using an electrical razor. For a traditional wet shave, you will also need some form of shaving soap or cream, to effectively lather your face, and a shaving brush. A traditional wet shave uses a single bladed razor and can either be done with a straight razor or with a safety razor. While the traditional wet shave can seem to be more expensive than using modern disposable razors and foams at first, it does not need to be. There are soaps and creams available at low costs, which can then last for months or even years. We personally do not recommend this option as we find customers who wet shave experience fading much quicker.

Clippers are often regarded as a beginner’s method as many people have already used them or the idea of using a razor on the first go is simply uncomfortable. Some people, again those with patchy or small bald spots, often like this method long term.

Electric razors are a common long term shaving solution for many, due to their portability and lack of mess. They are an easy, with few downsides. However, the downsides that exist are often a deal breaker. Due to the nature of an electric razor, you will probably need several passes to get the job done. Not only is this time consuming but it can also irritate your scalp, which you should have been told to avoid doing.

From my own personal experience, I can tell you I currently shave with a foil shaver/razor. It gets the job done fairly quickly and gives me the smooth look that I prefer. I would suggest shaving every other day but as we always say, each person is different. I would suggest getting into a routine that works best for yourself!
